Long Exposure Impact

Shooting a long exposure image yields a variety of results that may be desireable by the photographer. First, and most common, it allows moving subjects, such as water and sky, to create a soft, silky blur that implies motion. Second, the long exposure allows the photographer to create images where moving objects, such as people walking through the frame, vanish since they are not in a single position long enough to be rendered on the sensor. To achieve long exposures, the photographer either shoots during low light such as early morning or late evening, or uses a "Neutral Gradient"  filter, referred to as an ND, which limits light entering the camera without alterring color. The image, "Moonrise at Sunset"  uses a combination of both methods to create the soft blur of the ocean waves while eliminating evidence of people walking in front of the camera.
